If you’re planning on flying for an extended period, you’ll want to know how to stay comfortable during the flight. Some essential tips for long flights include staying hydrated, using earplugs and noise-canceling headphones, and getting plenty of sleep. Get eight or nine hours of sleep the night before if you can. Even better, get as much sleep as possible the week back.

Avoiding dehydration on long flights

If you’re planning to fly long distances this holiday season, you may have heard about the risks of dehydration. Flying is not only uncomfortable and stressful, but it can also cause dehydration. It’s easy to become thirsty and have dry skin after a flight, but there are ways to avoid dehydration on long flights.

One of the easiest ways to avoid dehydration is to limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. Caffeine is a diuretic and can thwart your efforts to stay hydrated. Instead, try to request a decaf or herbal tea instead of a standard cup of coffee. If you can’t find a beverage with decaf or herbal tea, consider bringing your own. Herbal teas can contain chamomile, peppermint, or ginger.

Another way to avoid dehydration on long flights is to pack a water bottle. Airplanes have a low cabin pressure, which makes it difficult for your body to absorb enough water. Additionally, dehydration can result in low blood pressure and an itchy nose.

Avoiding blood clots

There are ways to reduce your risk of blood clots, especially if you’re taking a long flight. First, make sure that you move around as much as possible. Try to stand up every two or three hours, flex your ankles, and raise and lower your legs. You can also wear compression stockings, which help prevent blood clots.

Blood clots are more likely to form on a long flight because of the increased risk of immobility. A study by the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that approximately one in every four hundred people traveling by plane will develop a blood clot. The risk is even higher for women, as well as for those who are severely overweight or who take birth control pills.

If you’re concerned about your risk for blood clots, talk with your doctor. Your doctor may advise a delay in travel or prescribe medication to reduce the risk.

Avoiding coronavirus

If you’re on a long flight, you must take precautions to avoid contracting the coronavirus. The virus is contagious and spreads via respiratory droplets, so you must wash your hands thoroughly after touching shared surfaces. It’s not just air travel that’s risky; terminals and office buildings are also high-risk areas. People who talk, cough, or sneeze are often the first to be exposed to the virus.

Fortunately, planes have excellent filtration and flight ventilation systems that remove coronavirus particles from the air every six minutes. Of course, the people in front of you are the source of infection but wearing a face mask can help. Covers prevent the virus from reaching your nose and lungs and can also prevent spit and saliva from touching your face.

Keeping moving during long flights

While flying, try to keep your body moving. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but a few stretches and simple exercises can help keep the blood flowing. It’s also a good idea to drink lots of water. You can also try some simple exercises while you’re sitting down.

Keeping moving is good for your health and can help prevent specific health problems associated with long flights. For example, if you sit in an airplane seat for hours, your legs will become immobile. This is a problem for your health because they can’t pump blood back up to the heart. Walking will also stretch your muscles and joints.

If your plane has aisles, try to walk up and down the aisles whenever you can. Even if you’re sitting, get up, and walk the gallery length during quiet periods. This will give your legs a chance to stretch and keep their posture.
